Simulation activities do something that most classroom lessons can’t. They put students inside a problem instead of just in front of one. Students can model chemical reactions, build circuits, explore forces and motion, run wave experiments, and work through math concepts from fractions up through calculus, all without a single physical material.

The simulations are built around the idea that students learn more when they can change the conditions and see what happens. These interactive activities can also reinforce academic concepts through retrieval practice as students test predictions and recall prior knowledge. A student exploring wave interference on PhET adjusts amplitude, frequency, and phase and watches the result in real time. That kind of interactive discovery is difficult to produce in a physical lab, especially at the lower grade levels, where lab supplies and safety concerns create barriers.

PhET simulations align with NGSS and Common Core and are available for use from elementary through college, with activities that support course objectives across elementary school through higher education.
