Barware Basics: Must-Have Tools For Any Bartender

As any experienced bartender will tell you, having the right barware tools can make all the difference when it comes to creating the perfect cocktail. From cocktail shakers and strainers to measuring tools and garnishing supplies, there are several must-have barware tools that every bartender needs in their toolkit. In this blog post, we will take a comprehensive look at some of the most important barware tools for bartenders, including cocktail shakers, cocktail strainers, bar mats, and more.

Mixing Tools

Cocktail Shakers

Cocktail shakers are one of the most essential barware tools for any bartender. They come in a variety of styles and sizes, including Boston shakers, cobbler shakers, and French shakers. Boston shakers are made up of two parts – a metal tin and a mixing glass – while cobbler shakers and French shakers are single pieces. Boston shakers are the most commonly used type of shaker in bars and restaurants. To use a Boston shaker, add ice, ingredients, and a cocktail strainer to the tin, seal it with the mixing glass and shake vigorously.

Mixing Glass

A mixing glass is another essential barware tool for bartenders. It is used in combination with a cocktail shaker to create a variety of cocktails, including stirred cocktails. Mixing glasses are typically made from tempered glass and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. To use a mixing glass, add ice, ingredients, and a cocktail strainer, stir the mixture with a bar spoon, and strain into a chilled glass.

Straining Tools

Cocktail Strainers

Cocktail strainers are used to separate solids and ice from a cocktail before it is served. There are three main types of cocktail strainers: Hawthorne strainers, julep strainers, and fine mesh strainers. Hawthorne strainers are the most commonly used type of strainer in bars and restaurants.

Hawthorne Strainer

A Hawthorne strainer is a type of cocktail strainer that is used to strain cocktails made with a shaker. It is typically made from metal and has a coil spring that fits inside the rim of the shaker. To use a Hawthorne strainer, place it over the opening of the shaker, and strain the cocktail into a chilled glass.

Fine Mesh Strainer

A fine mesh strainer is a type of cocktail strainer that is used to strain cocktails made with a mixing glass. It is typically made from metal and has a fine mesh screen that fits over the opening of the mixing glass. To use a fine mesh strainer, place it over the opening of the mixing glass, and strain the cocktail into a chilled glass.

Measuring Tools

Jiggers

Jiggers are used to measure precise amounts of liquid for cocktails. They come in a variety of sizes, typically ranging from 1/4 ounce to 2 ounces. Jiggers are typically made from metal and have two sides – one for measuring a larger amount and one for measuring a smaller amount. To use a jigger, fill the appropriate side with liquid, pour it into the shaker or mixing glass, and repeat until all the ingredients have been added.

Measuring Spoons

Measuring spoons are another type of measuring tool used in bartending. They are typically used for measuring smaller amounts of liquid, such as drops or dashes. Measuring spoons come in a variety of sizes and are typically made from metal. To use a measuring spoon, dip it into the liquid and carefully pour the desired amount into the shaker or mixing glass.

Miscellaneous Tools

Bar Mats

Bar mats are used to keep the bar clean and dry by absorbing any spills or drips. They are typically made from rubber and come in a variety of sizes and shapes. Bar mats are also useful for keeping barware tools in place while bartenders work. To use a bar mat, place it on the bar in front of the bartender and place barware tools on top of it.

Ice Scoops

Ice scoops are used to scoop ice into a cocktail shaker or mixing glass. They come in a variety of sizes and are typically made from metal or plastic. Ice scoops are essential for keeping hands and other objects out of the ice bin, which helps maintain cleanliness and hygiene in the bar. To use an ice scoop, scoop the desired amount of ice into the shaker or mixing glass.

Garnishing Tools

Garnishing tools are used to add finishing touches to cocktails, such as fruit slices, herbs, or decorative stirrers. There are several types of garnishing tools, including fruit knives, citrus zesters, and muddlers. Fruit knives are used to slice fruit, while citrus zesters are used to remove the outer layer of citrus fruit for added flavor. Muddlers are used to crush herbs or fruit to release their flavor into the cocktail. To use garnishing tools, follow the instructions for each specific tool and add the garnish to the cocktail before serving.

In conclusion, having the right barware tools is essential for creating the perfect cocktail. By investing in high-quality barware tools, bartenders can create delicious cocktails with ease and impress their customers with their skills.
