A Guide to Swedish Snus and How to Use Them

Swedish snus (pronounced “snoose”) is a type of smokeless tobacco product that originated in Sweden. It comes in small pouches that contain steam-pasteurized, air-cured tobacco. Unlike American dipping tobacco, Swedish snus does not undergo fermentation and contains less tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs), substances linked to cancer. The nicotine content in snus ranges from 8mg to 22mg per pouch. It provides a flavorful, discreet way to consume tobacco without having to spit.

Why Try Swedish Snus?

For smokers looking for a less harmful nicotine alternative, Swedish snus is worth trying. Compared to cigarettes, snus contains far fewer cancer-causing chemicals and doesn’t produce toxic second-hand smoke. Using snus can significantly reduce health risks like lung disease, cancer, and heart disease. The discreet pouches make snus easy to use without having to spit constantly like with American dip. Snus delivers a satisfying nicotine kick and enjoyable flavours.

How to Use Swedish Snus

Using Swedish snus is pretty simple once you get the technique down:

  1. Pick a Pouch – Decide which brand and flavor you want and take out a pouch. Keep the can refrigerated when not in use.
  2. Fluff the Pouch – Lightly fluff up the snus pouch to help release more flavor.
  3. Place It Under Your Upper Lip – Position the pouch under your upper lip, off to one side. Use your tongue to get it settled in place.
  4. Press Down – Use your finger to gently press down on the pouch and spread it against your gumline. This helps the snus feel more comfortable.
  5. Enjoy the Flavor – Within 5-10 minutes you’ll start to get snus flavor and nicotine. Keep the pouch in place, occasionally pressing it to release more juice.
  6. Remove and Discard When Done – Once the pouch starts to feel dry and lose flavor, remove it and discard it in the trash (not on the ground). Enjoy the lingering aftertaste.

It’s normal for snus to mildly irritate your gums at first, but they will soon adjust. Be sure to switch the pouch placement each time to give your gums a break. Drink water frequently while using snus to stay hydrated.
