When To Call a Professional Plumber

Plumbing problems occur for homeowners and renters alike, often causing inconvenience and sometimes significant damage. Knowing when to call a professional plumber will save you from further damage and costly repairs when facing plumbing issues. Here are situations when you should call plumbers:

Persistent Clogs

Persistent clogs in plumbing systems often occur due to the accumulation of foreign objects such as sanitary napkins, baby wipes, and nail clippings. Over time, even smaller items like hair and grease will build up, contributing to chronic blockages. Such clogs affect the functionality of toilets, sinks, and showers, causing them to drain slowly or not at all. Regularly encountering these issues signals the need for a professional assessment and intervention to restore proper function to the plumbing system.

Backflow

Backflow may occur when the normal flow of water reverses direction, leading to potential contamination of clean water supplies. This issue arises from various situations, including changes in water pressure, pipe damage, or faulty backflow prevention devices. Common indicators of backflow include discolored water, an unusual taste or smell, and reduced water pressure. With the help of plumbers, you can install backflow prevention devices. They block the reverse flow but require regular testing and maintenance to function effectively.

Low Water Pressure

A partially closed main shut-off valve may cause low water pressure in a home. This restricts the flow of water. Clogged pipes could also cause low water pressure where mineral buildup, rust, or debris accumulates over time, reducing water flow. Leaks in the main water line are also a potential source of low water pressure, as they divert water from its intended destination within the house. Malfunctioning regulators, designed to stabilize the water pressure, can result in a force that is too high or too low if they fail.

Lack of Hot Water

A lack of hot water in your home may point to issues with the water heater. These problems can result from simple electrical issues, such as a tripped circuit breaker. Sediment buildup at the bottom of the tank can also lead to heating inefficiency. This may prevent water from reaching the desired temperature. In tankless water heaters, the mineral scale can obstruct the heat exchanger, affecting performance. Regular wear and tear over time may compromise components like the thermostat or heating element, leading to a complete lack of hot water.

Burst Pipes

Burst pipes may result from freezing temperatures that cause the water inside pipes to expand. This expansion increases pressure on the pipe walls, leading to cracks or complete breaks. Another cause of burst pipes is plumbing systems’ natural aging and wear. They weaken over time and become susceptible to failure under normal water pressure. Corrosion also contributes to worn-out metal pipes, where rust and decay lead to weakened spots that eventually give way.

Leaking Gas

Leaking gas in a home originates from faulty appliances, damaged gas lines, or improper fittings and connections. Over time, natural wear and tear on gas pipelines and connectors can lead to small fissures through which gas can escape. Appliances that use gas, such as stoves and water boilers, will develop leaks if they are not properly maintained.

Incorrect installation of gas appliances or piping also results in leaks, highlighting the benefits of professional installation. The natural settling of a house can cause stress on gas lines, leading to disconnections or cracks. Exposure to extreme weather conditions, such as severe cold, will also compromise the integrity of gas lines.

Presence of Hard Water

High levels of minerals, such as calcium and magnesium, can characterise the presence of hard water in your home. This condition leads to scale buildup inside pipes, appliances, and fixtures, potentially reducing water flow and efficiency. Over time, the accumulation of these minerals may cause damage to plumbing systems, leading to leaks or complete blockages.

Appliances that use water, like dishwashers and water heaters, may also have shortened lifespans and increased energy consumption due to hard water. A plumber will assess the extent of hard water damage and recommend solutions, such as installing a water softener system that removes the minerals from the water before entering the home’s plumbing.
