The Human Element in Protecting Digital Assets

When we think about protecting digital assets, we think of ways to protect our technology. We think of things like strong passwords, firewalls, and encryption. We forget that humans are equally a part of this equation. A system is only as secure as the person relying on that system. Even the most secure internet bank is only safe if the user/staff makes the correct decisions. This is why the “human factor” is one of the biggest components in securing your digital assets.

Awareness is the First Step

Many security incidents occur due to user error and not the weakness of the system. It can be as simple as clicking on a link in a fake email, reusing passwords for all sites, or not locking a device. Security awareness plays a big role in preventing these types of incidents. Encouraging awareness by educating the user on recognizing scams, protecting their information, and reporting suspicious behaviour is an essential part of securing digital assets.

Training Makes a Difference

Well-trained employees for security-related incidents offer a better level of protection than those without training. Training employees helps them better identify threats and equates to a quicker response in the event of an incident; this includes recognizing phishing emails, creating strong passwords, and operating equipment properly. With effective training, the likelihood of the person making a bad decision is much lower.

Establishing a Culture of Security

Security should be part of the easy course of operation of the organization. This could mean recommending that personnel individually lock their screens, do not share log-ins, and carefully contemplate links and attachments before clicking them. Some simple reminder systems, whether in the form of posters, emails, or short processed meetings, could help to engrain patterns that guard against information compromise. Platforms such as SoFi have layers of security that protect against threats.

Leadership Guarantees Messaging

People down to the individual contributor must see that leadership cares about security. When folks answer to a manager who is following policies and procedures regarding security, then they are likely to do the same. Additionally, leadership can encourage security practices by developing user-friendly tools and rewarding positive engagement.

Technology such as two-factor authentication, encrypted Wi-Fi, and software updates will keep systems better protected, but it only works if people understand how to use these technologies properly. That is why it is in an organization’s best interests to offer clear user information and provide reasoning for using the tools.

Someone observes something unconventional, for example, a strange email or system behaving abnormally. They should recognize that they can communicate their observation without fear of reprimand. Report quickly before every small glitch becomes a big deal. The organization must offer reasonable conduits for help and for people to report issues.

Small Steps, Major Outcomes

In reality, even small actions lead to significant outcomes. Locking screens, utilizing different passwords for different accounts, and not using public Wi-Fi for private tasks is a small way of reducing risk. These tactics can all be perceived as basic habits, but they can protect data in powerful ways.

The People Make the System Stronger

Regardless of how powerful the technology is, people will always be a factor in the system. Every user, from novices to those who live and breathe the technology in their everyday lives, IT experts, can choose to protect or expose the digital asset. However, with enough knowledge, sustainable habits, and support, people can also become the best defense. When smart tools and smart choices come together, safety can be created for the digital space used by all.
