With a few weeks of autumn left and festive December approaching, it may be the perfect time for a binge-watching treat. And considering that Netflix now holds a record number of streaming subscriptions, we wondered — are there any good sci-fi series on Netflix? As it happens, there are quite a few. Another Life (2019-2021)
This two-season Netflix space series will sadly not have a continuation, but available 20 episodes tell an intriguing story of an unknown object, possibly of alien origin, landing on Earth. This is obviously not one of the Netflix space series documentaries, but a fiction set in the not-so-distant future. These series have a bit of space travel on an eye-catching ship with a touch of a sci-fi thriller and definitely amount to a good night at home.
Away (2020)
Away is a one-season, ten-episode Netflix space series telling a story of a female astronaut about to set on a mission to Mars. Even though Away is more of a melodrama in a space wrapper, dwelling on the main character’s personal and professional struggles. This Netflix show was widely acclaimed by the viewers, so we decided to rank it high on our list, too.
Countdown: Inspiration4 Mission to Space (2021)
This show ranks high on the Netflix space series list because, unlike most others, it is an actual documentary about SpaceX’s mission. You can watch as four civilians prepare for their ambitious flight to the International Space Station. You may also be pleased to know that all funds from this three-day mission went to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Besides, unless you are prepared to pay millions of dollars for a tourist trip to the ISS, these Netflix series are the closest you can get to experience what this trip looked like.
Dark Matter (2015-2017)
Another prematurely cancelled Netflix series widely acclaimed by the audience. A crew on a derelict spacecraft wakes up from sleep with their memories wiped clean. While they are searching for clues, they find a cargo of weapons and a destination to some space mining colony that should probably become a war zone soon.
Lost in Space (2018-2021)
In its selection of the best Netflix space shows, Orbital Today ranked Lost in Space as the number one to watch. In terms of plot and visuals, the ranking is totally accurate. We place these Netflix space series on the fifth spot simply because it is a remake of a 1998 sci-fi movie with the same name. You may know the story already — a spaceship crashed, a family is trying to survive in a hostile environment, while in the meantime, a young boy is making friends with a robot.
The Silent Sea (2021)
There are rumours that this Korean show will continue to the list of Netflix space series in 2022, but it already looks unlikely. In any case, the first season tells a bit scary but very intriguing story of a mission to an abandoned Moon base. The series’ name is an allusion to the Moon’s Sea of Tranquility.
Love, Death, and Robots (2019-present)
If you are wondering, what the best Netflix space series going on right now, Love, Death, and Robots are probably as close as it gets to the ongoing series. Not all of its episodes are space-related, by these series are totally worth watching if you’re into dark humour, with a touch of thriller and sci-fi. Just how dark do these Netflix series get? Well, they were directed by David Fincher, an Oscar winner behind Fight Club and many other works, so how’s that for an argument?
Space Force (2020-2022)
These series are essentially a Policy Academy set in space. If you’re not into anything serious or scary and simply want to have a good laugh, Netflix Space Force is definitely for you. It is also one of the newest Netflix series now, even though the third season will not happen.
Apollo 10½ (2022)
Another fresh Netflix series on our list that can be watched with an entire family. This kind of nostalgic cartoon tells a story of a boy who is approached by a NASA astronaut for help. The kid gets a chance to become the first person on the Moon before Neil Armstrong goes there, so how about that for an alternative space race history?
These are some of the best Netflix original space shows now, but of course, there are many other Netflix series and movies on the topic of space. Plus, this streaming service also has a decent selection of sci-fi shows not necessarily related to space exploration.
