Tips for Creating the Perfect Wedding Colour Palette

There are numerous things to consider and put in place to ensure you have the perfect wedding. Because of how hectic things can get as the big day draws closer, it is crucial to get as many things as you can off your to-do list as early as possible. One of the things you need to get right early on is your wedding colours. It might seem like a trivial matter—it’s just picking a collection of colours after all— but choosing your wedding colours requires careful consideration.

Start with Compatible Pairings

Building the perfect wedding colour palette starts with picking the main colour. Many couples go with white as a base because it is the easiest to work with. Once you have the base, it is time to pick the accent colour. This should be a colour that complements the base colour. A classic option is Tiffany Blue, which has been a popular choice for over 150 years. To get it right and ensure a harmonious palette, use the correct tiffany-blue colour code because it can be difficult to match blue hues once you pick one.

Some couples go with bolder options rather than white and an accent colour. Some bolder options to consider include grey, blue, coral, or earthy colours as your base depending on your preferences. These base colours are great because building a palette around them is easy. You can even use them to create accent colours to ensure a harmonious look and feel.

If you don’t know what colours to pick, you can go with your favourites or turn to a colour wheel. The latter makes it easy to find complementary colours that look great together or contrasting colours that help create interesting palettes.

Find Inspiration at the Venue

Sometimes, the colour palette you want to use is incompatible with your chosen location. Before you panic, you should know your chosen location can also become a source of inspiration.

Venues like refurbished lots, warehouses, and destination wedding locations can give you many ideas on where to start. They can also be blank canvases that you can decorate however you like. You can add as much or as little as you like according to your vision and the personality you want to give the space.

If the space already has decorative elements, you can use those as inspiration for your colour palette. You can get inspiration from the colour of the carpet, the lighting fixtures, the view, or even the paint on the walls. When deciding your colour palette for these spaces, choose one that enhances what you love about them, but be careful not to clash visually because that will spoil the look and feel you are going for.

Consider the Seasons

Another source of inspiration is the season the wedding will be held in. While there are no rules regarding the colours you can use in specific seasons, your outcome will depend on how you create your colour palette.

For example, a rosy pink base colour is a great colour to use as a base for a spring wedding. White bright coral is an excellent option for summer weddings, jewel tones are great for fall weddings, and you should consider silver and muted mauve for winter weddings.

As always, you can use an accent colour to amplify or tone down your main colour or create interesting visuals.

Start with Your Favourite Flowers

You may already know what flowers you would like to use for your wedding, bouquet and table arrangements. Their colour can be a great place to start when building a colour palette. If you love lavender or lilacs, for example, you can use the colours of the same names to create your colour palette.

Find Inspiration Around You

If you are still unsure about your wedding colour palette, you can always find inspiration in what is already around you. Start by looking at the colours you love surrounding yourself with; your wardrobe and home can be the best way to learn this.

Remember that the colours surrounding your life are the ones you will be happy to see when you look at your wedding photos years later.

Also, finding inspiration around you provides opportunities to reuse your wedding decor. For example, you can easily repurpose linen, vases, and other decor items if they match your home decor.

Your wedding colour palette can play a much bigger role than you imagine. It can determine the decor, bridal attire, how you decorate the wedding venue and much more. While it can seem stressful to find the right colour for such an important day, you can find inspiration in numerous places to give you a great starting point.
