Video games are a very popular pastime for millions of people around the globe, and are entering a golden age of development from recent advancements in technology. The term “video game” refers to any game that can be played on a computer using an electronically manipulated image. Nowadays, this encompasses a very wide range of games, along with the technology that they use, that is available on the market. With this huge gaming selection available, players are sure to gravitate towards games that are sure to entertain whatever specific interests they have. Some players enjoy watching the intricate storylines, some like improving their reaction times and other fine motor skills, and others love interacting with other players over calls during a live game.

These gaming tastes can vary dramatically by geographical region, even within just the United States. Each state within the Union has a different “favorite” game that is most commonly played. Hogwarts Legacy is the reigning champion across the largest number of US States, taking the top spot of four states, including Texas, Idaho, Missouri, and New Mexico. Legend Of Zelda, The Last of Us, and High On Life are a few other hugely successful games that are highly popularized across multiple other American states. There does not seem to be one dominant genre that has won the favor of the American people- all of these games fall into different categories including sports, war, and zombie apocalypse games.

Video games preferences stratify even more at the global level. A country’s most popular game can depend widely on the part of the world that it is in. For example, Madden is the USA’s favorite game, which makes sense because football is America’s most popular sport. This trend is not replicated in Asia or Europe because the sport has not gained as much traction in these regions. Instead, war games such as Modern Warfare and God of War: Ragnorok are popular in the United Kingdom and Russia, respectively. Pikmin is Japan’s game of choice, Legend of Zelda’s is Australia’s top pick, and France loves Pokemon Legends.

There are some video game genres that stand out from the pack in terms of popularity. Sport games are by far the most played around the world, with FIFA being the most sold game ever (325 million copies). This is not a surprise, considering the fact that soccer is the most popular sport on a worldwide scale. Multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) games are also super popular, especially among younger generations. Players are drawn to the ability to interact with other players in a combative environment, such as the gaming format that is found in Honor of Kings. Simulation games such as Minecraft are the third most popular genre, followed by action/adventure and first person shooter games.

There is also a lot to look forward to in the gaming world thanks to the release of new technology. Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) gaming is sure to be the hottest trend soon with its ability to draw players into an immersive world that goes beyond visuals on a screen. By 2027, both AR and VR games will have over 100 million users, all of which might find traditional games to be archaic going forward. Fitness gaming is projected to also be a trend, as people are looking for ways to complete their daily exercise in more entertaining ways. WiiFit and Just Dance are two of the most popular titles in this category. Casino gaming is also expected to grow quite a bit in the gaming world, led by games such as Coin Master and Bingo Blitz.
