4 Ways Tech is Disrupting the Auto Industry

In the auto industry, disruption is welcomed. Consumers are demanding new, innovative updates to cars every year. As a result, technology is allowing cars to be safer and more sophisticated. These changes are up-to-speed with consumer demands and driving the industry forward.

These advancements start with behind-the-scenes manufacturing processes. Streamlined workflows and more efficient processes are transforming the business model. Technology is also altering how cars are being designed and built, installing new features to enhance the driving experience. And, of course, technology is also changing how cars operate, leaning into driverless operations. Keep reading to learn more about how tech is disrupting the auto industry for the better.

1. Personalizing the Sales Process

Buying a car is a major life purchase. It’s a decision that most individuals will make only a few times during their lifetime. Because of this, many assume that buying a car is an adequate process filled with rounds of negotiations and securing a loan. However, thanks to technological advancements the sales process is becoming much smoother for buyers and sellers.

Automotive sales software is helping dealerships improve the customer service relationship from the start through its AI capabilities. This software will instantly reply to leads and follow up with pertinent information. If someone asks about a specific model’s capabilities, for example, the platform will respond promptly with the answer. In subsequent messages, the software may ask if the individual wants to come in to look at the car and take a test drive.

Through engaging, authentic conversations with potential buyers, the tool can develop a personal relationship with the individual. This leads to better customer experiences, more conversions, and a sense of trust and loyalty. Buyers leave feeling confident in their decision-making process and assured that the dealership is taking care of them.

2. Making Room for Driverless Cars

Self-driving cars aren’t as futuristic as they were just a few years ago. In reality, they are becoming more mainstream. In 2020, over forty corporations were working on driverless cars. These included brands like Tesla and General Motors who are in the business of making cars to tech companies like Apple.

There are several benefits to autonomous driving. First off, it can make driving more accessible and convenient. Those who were unable to drive due to several factors — such as declining vision or physical impairments — will now have the chance to decide when and where they want to go. It may also lead to fewer accidents with the car detecting and anticipating when a collision may occur. Less traffic and more efficient use of road space are other benefits that may come as a result of this revolutionary advancement.

3. Updating Antiquated Insurance Practices

Getting a car insurance rate used to be primarily based on a driver’s age, geographical region, and motor vehicle report. While these factors were helpful, they didn’t tell the entire picture of a person’s risk factors. Today, usage-based insurance (UBI) policies are becoming more prominent and can give major cost-saving benefits to drivers on the road.

UBI works by tracking a driver’s habits over a certain amount of time. This data is typically collected via an app on a driver’s smartphone or through a device attached to the car. With this information, insurance companies can determine what a driver’s actual risk is which can directly influence their insurance premium. Those who are deemed safe drivers may qualify for a much lower premium than they were typically quoted.

With UBI, the insurance company can monitor your driving speed, how often you brake or accelerate, and even your cell phone usage while driving. There are some concerns in terms of privacy and data collection. However, most insurance companies are upfront with the consumer on what type of data they are collecting and for how long.

4. Optimizing Vehicle Designs

Lastly, technological advancements in AI are changing how cars are designed and manufactured. With its ability to analyze vast amounts of data at warp speed, AI can identify how to enhance current production processes. It can also improve supply chains to ensure that there isn’t a lag time in getting the latest models into the hands of consumers.

Reports show that AI in car manufacturing has led to a 20% boost in production efficiency. For consumers, this could help lessen the rising costs of cars. In recent years, global supply chain interruptions pressured manufacturers to increase their prices. More efficient processes can help auto manufacturers with their direct-to-consumer sales modalities.

Additionally, AI is also being used to upgrade car models. Each manufacturer is up against one another to come out with the latest and greatest new features year after year. AI can help manufacturers generate different model prototypes based on consumer feedback and demand. Fuel efficiency, aerodynamics, and aesthetics could all see a nice upgrade thanks to AI.

Conclusion

As technology continues to advance, so will the auto industry. Just about every component of the market — from design and production to sales and marketing — is being improved by tech. Leading automotive manufacturers that embrace technology and leverage it to their advantage will surely see a positive correlation in their sales.
